CTV: Steele on your Side Email

Olson on your side has been replaced by Steele on your side on CTV.  I emailed the following email below, and got called by CTV today asking me for more information.  They said they have forwarded my story idea to the producers.

Hi Lynda

Congratulations on being on the CTV team.  TLC released a series call “Extreme Couponing”  featuring Americans scoring big grocery hauls saving 90% - 100% on their grocery bills.  This has resulted in a boom of inspired Canadians who are striving to maximize their savings using coupons.  One of the biggest things standing in the way of a couponer, and has frustrated many cashiers are coupon policies, and how they are being inconsistently applied amongst the locations.  Shoppers Drug Mart and Superstore more recently have started to publish new coupon policies to hopefully clear up a bunch of questions.  With so many couponers entering the market, the Head offices of many retail and grocery stores have been inundated with emails and calls complaining about inconsistencies, or asking for official coupon policies.  Even the wording on the coupon itself raises a lot of arguments. Defining the meaning between purchase and transaction.  If the coupon is for a free product, does that also mean free of taxes?  London Drugs and Save of Foods allow coupon stacking.  Allowing customers to use multiple coupons on a single item.  London Drugs has been doing this for years, whereas Save on Foods has just recently adopted this.   Just by contacting London Drugs you will find how many people email them constantly asking for clarity and complaining about inconsistent policies.  I know I have emailed them at least  4 times.  To also change the perception of the couponer.  I hate going to the grocery store and have a manager get mad at me, and make me feel like I am stealing from them.  Stores get the full value of the coupon back, and a handling fee for accepting the coupon.  If anything the store should be thanking me for using coupons, as they are getting a little bit more in revenue because of it.

I hope you will be able to clear up a lot of questions and get these stores consistent.

Thank you,

My Stockpile Pics *enter with caution*

TP Tower
Welcome to my stockpile pics.  I will update as I continuously try to organize and re-arrange it, as my 1 bedroom apartment can only hold so much.  I started couponing back in January starting out just finding cheap toilet paper and laundry soap was my focus.  As I got more coupons, and learned more about couponing it trickled in to stocking up on cleaning, beauty, and more importantly food.  Didn't take any stockpile pics of my food, as that is updated all the time but am proud to say I got lots of cookies, soup, cereal, tuna and pasta to last me some time.

Wal-Mart Coupon Policy Test $12.07 Overage

I've been reading on the coupon boards that Wal-mart has a new coupon policy that allows you to have overages.  What is an overage??  An overage happens when the value of the coupon exceeds the price of the product.  They allow overages because when they mail the coupon to the manufacturer they are getting the full value back, therefore they owe us change in return.  If you do have an overage you have 2 options.  You can apply the overage to the rest of your "basket" groceries, or they can give you the change.

I had 2 coupons that I wanted to use to test this new policy.  I had a $5 off any 3 Gillette Products, and $5 off any 2 Olay Products.  When a coupon says ANY this includes trial/travel size items.
Gillette Shaving Cream=$1.27
Olay Lotion=$1.57

I only used coupons on this trip, and with overages, wal-mart paid me $12.07.

Coupon Stacking at Save on Foods $5.34 Total =D

This is my first time trying out the new coupon policy at Save on Foods.  Not all locations are doing it yet, so be sure to check with the manager first.  I went to the Cambie and 7th location.  I will say that groceries there in general are fairly pricey with the occasional sale.  So to stack coupons there refer to my post last month about how to stack coupons, and the same rules will apply there.  Make sure they are all different UPC codes, and it can't exceed the value of the item.  Please note that as much as I would love to list or show you the coupons used, a lot of my trips are unplanned and I would have used them all on my shopping trip.  If you have any questions about couponing, or if you have a valid stack you would like to use, shoot me a message.

My receipt. $75.48 for all the groceries
less $21.76 save on more card
less $48.38 coupons
=$5.34

No HST, cheap gas, and 46% savings RCSS 04-29-11

I think I just out did myself.  I even shocked the supervisor.  I didn't really plan this shopping trip so I just used coupons that made sense.  Today was no HST.  This is the best time to buy junk food or toiletries.  I will try as best as possible to break down the savings and point out all the coupons used.  Most of these coupons I've gotten through coupon trains, meetings, flyer inserts and store tearpads.  If the coupon still exists I will indicate where to find it.

Currently Superstore has an in-store promotion.  If you buy $20 of pepsico/quaker products from now to May 19th they will mail you a $30 Grocery Gift Card, therefore you get your money back and make $10
2X7UP 6 pack   $2.96 each
1X Pepsi Max 6 pack $2.96 - $2.96 = FREE (Coupon B2 Pepsi product get Pepsi Max free Tearpad)
2xBrisk 12 cans $3.65 - $1.00= $2.65 each ($1 off tearpad)
Life Cereal $4.82-$4.82=FREE (Mail-in Rebate from Quaker 2 months ago)
1xGranola Bars=$2.00
4X Catelli Pasta (2) whole wheat (2) Bistro $7.88-$2.00 (Save.ca still available)
2X Schwepps 2L Pop $2.98- $1.00CZ-$1.00MF= $0.49 cents each ($1.00Coupon Zone on wall + $1.00Tear Pad)
2X Orange Crush 2L Pop $2.98- $1.00CZ-$1.00MF= $0.49 cents each ($1.00Coupon Zone on wall + $1.00Tear Pad)
1XAirwick Freshmatic $7.99-$5.00=$2.99 (Smartsource flyer)
1xGlade Sense and Spray $9.88-$9.88=FREE(websaver.ca still available)
1x4L Milk=$4.37
1XCheese=$6.99
1XResolve Cleaner $5.97-$1.00 (Coupon from in-store demo lady)
Steak and Rib=$27.52
1XIrish Spring Body Wash $2.99-0.75CZ-$2.00MF=$0.24(CZ available and MF from Smartsource Flyer)
5XNexxus Shampoo $2.49=$12.45-$15.00=I made $2.55 (Tearpad available at Safeway or SDM)

Overall Savings=$57.91 in coupon and HST savings
Paid $67.79-$30.00 Gift card that will be mailed to me for purchasing $20.00 of quaker/pepsi products
=$37.79 out of pocket

So they don't advertise it but on my last couple shops they have allowed coupon overages because there is usually one supervisor and they have to quickly punch in all the coupon savings over $10.00 they don't have time to be over analyzing everything.

On top of these savings because I spent over $100 before coupons they gave me a coupon to save $0.10 on every litre of gas up to 100 litres, and if I combine that with my PC Credit Card they will take off an additional $0.10 cents per litre.  $0.20 cents per litre savings on my next fill up!!!

Coupons I used at Superstore on 04-23-11

I had a request to post coupons, and going forward I'll take some pictures or post a quick video explaining the coupons before I use them.
Superstore allows you to combine a manufacturer and coupon zone coupons on a single item.
In the picture I have a tear pad coupon I got from PriceSmart last month, and the coupon zone coupon I got just yesterday.  The 2L Pop was on sale for $1.24, if you can score 2L Brand name pop for about $1.00 that is cheap already.  Both coupons say I can save $1.00 WUB (When U Buy) 2 2L Bottles, and since I can combine the coupon zone offer and manufacturer offer I got $2.00 off the 2 Bottles.  Since there was a limit of 4 I used 2 sets of this coupon combination.

Couponing News

Sorry, I haven't posted in awhile with all the buzz of playoff fever.  I do want to keep you updated though with some recent new things I've learned in my couponing adventure.

1. Know your store's coupon policy
-For the longest time I kept trying to confirm the coupon policy at Real Canadian Superstore (RCSS), because people in the EAST where allowed to coupon stack out there.  So with much success I finally got to coupon stack at Marine Dr. location and this has been adopted everywhere, and if you have problems just tell them that other locations are doing it.  So what does this mean??  Superstore has a wall of coupons right when you walk in called COUPON ZONE.  The header of the coupons will say coupon zone which are only valid at Superstore and No Frills or any other chain owned by Loblaws.  Sometimes the header can say Manufacturer Coupon which can be used at ANY store Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire etc. The coupon policy is you are allowed to combine a coupon zone coupon and a manufacturer coupon on one item.

For example:  Minute Maid Heart Wise 2L Juice on sale $2.49
less CZ Coupon $1.00 off + MF Coupon $1.00 off =$0.49

Wal-Mart has also recently updated their coupon policy too.  It says that if the value of the coupon exceeds the retail price they either have to pay you the change or you can use it towards the purchase of the rest of your products. How can they do this?  Wal-Mart submits the coupons and gets the full value from the manufacturer, so they allow the customer to claim the full value as well.

2. Call Johnson and Johnson every month you are allowed to request 2 of the following:
1-866-JNJ-BABY
$2 off Carefree/Stayfree/OB etc.
$3 off Aveeno/Clean and Clear/Neutrogena etc.
$2 off Listerine and many other products
$2 off Tylenol and many other products
And New Parent Packs one time only.

Saving South of the Border

A smart canucker sent me an email for some threads to check out if I want to try extreme couponing in the states.  Haven't had much time to go down south or check out these sites, but if you head down frequently you may want to give this a gander.

My two go to sites for shopping in Washington state are :
http://www.frugallivingnw.com/
and
http://frugalchicliving.org/

Both sites are related and have all the weekly deals for Freddies. Make sure to read the comments after the posts because this is where I learn the most tips...like I learned to use all paper/store flyer coupons first and then the rewards card otherwise the store coupons "adjust" themselves to account for the other....sneaky sneaky eh?

Hope you find a ton of deals!

Coupon Meeting April 9, 2011

What an awesome coupon filled day.  Today the Vancouver Sun or your local paper would have2 flyers filled with coupons.  One Red Plum, and Smartsource.  Today was also the bi-weekly coupon meeting. We had 22 people there, the biggest meeting so far. I got lots of coupons, and additional P&G Brandsaver Flyers.  By the end of it I was asking for advice for buying a Swiffer wet jet since I have a very gross old skool mop that has got to go.  So I got all this advice on where to buy it, and he coupons to use.  One couponer had a spare one she had got in her stockpile, and offered to sell it to me for $12!!! London Drugs retails for $29.99.  So I was so excited to get my mop on when I got home.  Superstore also has the NO TAX event this weekend and I have been looking for good deals on bodywash, and the Nivea was on sale for $2.99 less $2.00 off coupon I paid 0.99 with no tax.  I am tired, just finished sorting through all the coupons.

Next meeting April 23, 2011 Let me know if you want to come with.

COUPON STACKING

According to London Drugs (LD) policy "Multiple coupons can be used on a single item as long as it comes from different sources" aka coupon stacking. When they say different sources, that means different UPC codes.  Some stacking can get quiet complicated if you know how to read the coupons.

I'll go through a couple examples. Feel free to post comments for further explanation. I learned how to stack by reading the smart canucks site, and by asking customer service reps at LD. It's always good to check if you are unsure. The last thing you want to do is go to the cashier, be denied, and do the walk of shame back to put all the stuff back on the shelf.

Here is a simple stack:
Kraft Sizzling salads Dressing
Retail Price:$4.99
-save.ca coupon $1.00 off
-tear-pad last month $1.00 off
-tear-pad this month $0.75 off
-tear-pad this month $0.75 off
=$1.49 plus tax

A little more complicated but useful for all mommies out there.
Coupon stack for diapers and wipes:
Pampers Diapers $15.99
Pampers Wipes $4.99=$20.98
-Brandsaver online $1.00 off wipes
-Brandsaver insert. $1.00 off wipes
-Brandsaver online $4.00 off wipes and diapers
-Brandsaver insert. $4.00 off wipes and diapers
-Brandsaver insert. $2.00 off diapers
=$8.98 plus tax after coupons
If you have pamper coupons from Gyno, or call for them you can get them even cheaper.

Febreeze WUB(when u buy)
3 x 2.99 = $8.97
-Brandsaver online $2.00 off WUB 2
-Brandsaver insert. $4.00 off WUB 3
-Brandsaver insert. $2.00 off WUB 2
=$0.97 plus tax = 0.34 cents EACH!!

If you see the price cheaper somewhere else you can also price match at london drugs with stacking and get these items closer to FREE.

How to read your coupons

  • Know what you are entitled to.
  • Are there any exceptions? A specific size, brand, quantity.
  • Can you find a loop hole? If a coupon says ANY you can use it on any product even if it isn't in the picture.
  • Look for the expiration date. That is the first thing cashiers look for, so you should also know where it is in case they need you to point it out.
  • Look for a canadian mailing address, very rarely do coupons with a US address be valid for Canada, unless the coupon notes it.
  • Does the value of the coupon include taxes? Last month Shoppers had a $1.79 Adidas deo on sale, and right beside it were $2.00 off coupons. Normally a cashier will adjust the coupon to the price of the item, and you are left to pay the tax, but in this case the coupon includes the taxes resulting in purchase to be FREE.

Where to find COUPONS?

Where to find Coupons?
There are many ways to get coupons. The most obvious one is in the grocery store. If you read other sites they call these coupons in-store smartsource coupons or tear-pads. Some gold mine stores are Shoppers Drug Mart, Price Smart, Save on Foods, Safeway, Nesters, IGA and sometimes Wal-mart and Canadian Tire. Superstore also has a coupon board but read the top of the coupon. If it says "coupon zone" it is only valid at superstore, if it says "manufacturer coupon" it can be used anywhere.
You can also find coupons in your local paper, the sun or province. These coupon inserts are called smart source, red plum or quarterly P&G Brandsaver. People go on recycle bin walks to scoop up inserts that were thrown out. I haven't done that yet.

I read through the coupon tab on smart canucks once a day, and you will see announcements for new coupons through different sites the links are on the bottom right of the homepage.

Some other websites:
Right at Home - printable SC johnson products
Life Made delicious - Betty Crocker, Cheerios

Occasionally companies release coupons on their facebook pages, and you have to click "like" to access it. Sign up for FREE samples, and when it arrives, they normally include a coupon.  Purex with Zout is offering free samples right now.

Make sure the mailing address on the coupon is canadian, as you may have stumbled on the US site.

Just like a recent post, I provided a list of companies that mommies or parents to be can contact for coupons or freebies, there is a huge list I will post in the upcoming days of companies you can contact.

Coupon Meetings happen every 2nd saturday at Still Creek McD's at 11am. This is a chance to get rid of coupons you don't want, and go through everyone elses coupons, talk about deals, and learn of new places to find more coupons.

Coupon Trains are found on the smart canuck site. There are many versions of trains, but I like what they called old fashion trains. A conductor, let's say me. I put together a bunch of coupons in an envelope and mail to one person. They take out the coupons they want and replace it with same or more amount of coupons, then mail it to the next person.

More Mommy Links

From smartcanucks.ca  let me know how they turn out, and which ones are no longer valid so I can keep the list updated.

This is an old list and some are expired but some are still good!
